Large game like Deer and the famous Big Horn Sheep as well as chipmunks (watch your snacks) are abundant in this wilderness playground.

The wildlife viewing station is located next to the lake and offers telescopes for a small fee. The best time to view the Big Horn Sheep are November - January which is the rutting season. Ewes and rams are abundant year round and are often seen at the edge of the highway, so be careful and watch for the mountain wildlife.

Guanella Pass Scenic & Historic Byway

The road begins in Georgetown and ends in the Town of Grant. Be alert for deer and other critters on the road.
After thunderstorms the road can be muddy and sections are washboard, this is a great road for SUV type vehicles and motorcycles. It's passable by car but it's not paved all the way.

Construction is in process on Guanella Pass for the next couple of years. Check in at the Gateway Visitors Center for current closure and delay information.
